Technological progress is undisputedly regarded as the driving force behind economic performance. It leads to increases in productivity and employment growth and to the emergence of entirely new technologies, which in turn form the basis of new economic sectors. In this policy paper, Tom Broekel, Louis Knuepling and Gero Stenke examine which areas of the technology profile German research funding focuses on. The results show that technologies that are complex and rather unrelated to Germany''s technological strengths are increasingly being funded. This strategy can be seen as risky, but also potentially profitable.
