The Institute of Economic and Cultural Geography welcomes Silas Föhr as a new research associate in the Department of Economic Geography as of May 1st, 2021.

Silas Föhr studied geography with a focus on economic geography at Leibniz University Hannover and Aalborg University (AAU). Besides regional development and urban planning, he is especially interested in research on sustainable mobility. In his master thesis he investigated the influence of bicycle infrastructure on bicycle use in the Hannover region. Parallel to his studies, he was able to gain practical experience while working for mobility providers and transport planning consultancies.

In the summer semester of 2021, he will be supervising the study project on digitalisation in mobility alongside Dr. Kerstin Schäfer.

For his PhD, he will work in the research project "Societal Transformation in a Digital Society - Raising Awareness for the Participation in a Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility Transition" led by Dr. Kerstin Schäfer and Prof. Christiane Meyer, which started on May 1st 2021. The project examines the change of access to transportation through the increased use of mobility apps. To this end, the project will investigate the extent to which increasingly digital mobility access could contribute to transport-related social exclusion and how citizens should be involved in the development process and introduction of such apps.

The research project will run for three years and is funded by the VW Foundation and the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture as part of the initiative „Niedersächsisches Vorab“.
