It is also responsible for the fruit s appearance. In many fruitcrop species, russeting compromises fruit appearance and thus commercial value. Here, we review the literature on fruit russeting, focusing on the factors and mechanisms that induce it and on the management and breeding strategies that may reduce it.

Russeting partially restores apple skin permeability to water vapour – QUEST-LFS – Leibniz Universität Hannover
www.quest-lfs.uni-hannover.de/de/forschung/publikationen/details/fis-details/publ/5bcdf021-e7b1-48c0-86d1-843cf093f01a

Apple fruit surfaces are often in parallel composites, comprising areas of intact cuticle atop a healthy epidermis adjacent to areas covered by periderm so called russet . The occurrence of non russeting and russeting genotypes makes this species an ideal model to study the barrier properties of its composite skin. The objective was to quantify the water vapour permeances of non russeted P ES and russeted fruit skins P PS . R...

Lenticels are sites of initiation of microcracking and russeting in Apple mango verfasst von Thomas O. Athoo, Andreas Winkler, Willis O. Owino, Moritz Knoche Abstract The mango cultivar Apple is an important fruitcrop in Kenya, but it is highly susceptible to russeting. The objective was to establish whether lenticels predispose cv. Apple mango to russeting. Fruit mass and surface area increased in a sigmoidal patter...

Fruit skin failure is associated with a number of disorders including shriveling, cracking, russeting, and skin spots. All result in reduced market value. Our objective is to review the literature on the strategies adopted by fruit to cope with the challenge of continuing skin expansion.

Irregularities in the integrity of the epidermis and cuticle were also observed. By 120 DAP, PGox fruit cracked and showed lenticel associated russeting. Increased cuticular permeability was associated with microcracks in the cuticle around lenticels and was correlated with reduced cortical firmness at all time points and extensive post harvest water loss from the fruit, resulting in premature shrivelling.
