What does an economic geographer actually do? Results of the 2024 alumni survey of economic geography in Hannover

For more than a quarter of a century, the Department of Economic Geography in Hanover has been surveying its alumni every four years about their professional activities and their ex-post assessment of their studies. The data from the most recent survey in winter 2024 is based on a sample of 374 people (response rate 52%) and has now been evaluated in detail. This excellent data basis enables statistically representative statements to be made, differentiated both by the highest degree obtained in Hanover (42% diploma, 12% bachelor's degree in geography, 33% master's degree in economic geography, 13% doctorate or habilitation) and by graduation year or gender. Overall, the data confirms the strategic path taken by economic geography in Hanover for almost three decades: in research-oriented teaching, students acquire the prerequisites for acquiring practical skills that they will develop and need when they later enter professional life. A set of slides (only in German) shows the detailed results of the survey, and a text file (only in German) provides a two-page summary of the key findings.
