Timo Kleiner-Schaefer and Kerstin Schaefer published a new article on barriers to university–industry collaboration in Turkey in The Journal of Technology Transfer. University-industry collaborations (UICs) are one of the main sources of external knowledge and technologies for industrial firms. The author team conducted the firm-level study of the R&D-related segment of the manufacturing industry with over 200 firms in Istanbul by using logistic regression analysis to test the effect of potential barriers on using UICs for innovative activities. The results show lack of external support harms collaboration most, highlighting the importance of university technology transfer offices. However, lack of trust and skill-mismatch have a reversed effect, increasing collaboration, which shows the need to distinguish between perceived (revealed) and deterring barriers for UICs in a similar fashion as researchers already do for investigation innovative activity. The article is based on part of the dissertation “Innovation in an emerging economy: firm-level evidence from Turkey” by Timo Kleiner-Schaefer and is openly accessible thanks to project DEAL.
