In the article "The prospects of advanced frugal innovations in different economies" published in the journal Technology in Society, Julian Barnikol and Ingo Liefner present a new perspective on Advanced Frugal Innovation (AFI). By applying frugal design principles, AFI can offer more sustainable products at competitive prices. In their article, the authors identify concrete spatial conditions for the emergence of AFI based on the theories of innovation systems and the Multi-Level Perspective. The picture that emerges from this is that, in general, the preconditions for the development of AFIs in both emerging and advanced economies are set in opposite directions. Accordingly, the preconditions are fulfilled in each case, as are the obstacles that influence the development of AFIs.
