Dr. Kerstin Schäfer received the Peter Meusburger Award "Geography and Knowledge" for her dissertation "Competitiveness through R&D internationalization: patent- and interview data based studies on a latecomer in the telecommunications industry". The dissertation calls for contextualizing knowledge production and distinguishing between types of knowledge such as technological knowledge or innovative ideas when researching how it travels between locations. Another major findings shows that there is a kind of knowledge valuable to firms in emerging regions that can be accessed at many (mostly Western) locations interchangeably because it is embedded in a global network of established industry actors. The award is sponsored by the students of Peter Meusburger and given every year to a promising young scholar.
